The autonomous region of Murcia is one of contrasts – mountains and plains, beaches and woodlands, semi-arid and irrigated lands. A third of the region is over two thousand feet above sea level and there are over one hundred miles of coastline. The one thing that is constant is the sun – nearly three thousand hours a year!
Brief history of Murcia
Given its location it is not surprising that the Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Cathaginians all came to Murcia and left their mark. But it fell to the Romans to establish a period of some six hundred years of relative economic prosperity throughout the coastal region. The Arabs, under Abdelaziz, conquered the army of the Visigoths in 713 at Cartagena and in turn fell under the control of Castile from 1243 onwards, to be eventually expelled in 1492. Some three hundred years of agricultural anonymity was relieved in the eighteenth century by a period of baroque splendour.
Coastline and Beaches of Murcia
The Costa Calida offers two seas - Mar Menor and the Mediterranean - on one coastline. The Mar Menor was originally an open bay of some 65sq miles that is now virtually enclosed and provides an ideal bathing and water sports sea of no more than seven metres deep.
The coastline ranges from impressive cliffs to inviting beaches of white sand that seem to go on and on, until they meet a fishing village or a cove with mirror-clear waters. One can enjoy all of this in almost three thousand hours of sun a year at an average daytime temperature of 21C.
But the coast is not solely about beaches and water sports; there are protected natural areas such as the salt marshes of San Pedro and the wildlife reserve of Calblanque close to La Manga and the village of Cabo de Palos.

These include La Manga, Torre Pacheco, Los Ramblas, Campoamor and Villamartin, Mosa Trajectum.
Beaches
Only a five minute drive from the resort lies the Mar Menor, a huge lagoon 26km long and 7km wide which is well known for its warm tranquil and salty water, rich in health giving minerals.
Los Alcazares and the Costa Cálida offers a number of blue flag rated beaches. Visitors to the Mar Menor find that there really is something for everyone - from the flat sandy beaches perfect for relaxing in the sun to the pebbled beaches and rocky alcoves ideal for snorkelling. An abundant mix of attractions including water sports and the famous mud baths make for a truly wonderful holiday destination.

Course description
This excellent 18-hole, par 72 golf course, designed by Dave Thomas was created by combining different environments and working for a total adaptation to the Mediterranean landscape and vegetation. They have transformed the practically flat ground into an interesting and undulating golf terrain, with strategically placed lakes and carefully designed tree planting integrated in to the design, to challenge all levels of golfers. Watch out for the 7th Hole - 174m Par 3, played over water with the green on a small island!
Dave is rightly proud of his creation and has cleverly shaped the previously flat landscape into an interesting and undulating golfing terrain that is pleasing to the eye and provides an interesting and challenging test of golf. The design incorporates 3 strategically located lakes and a great deal of emphasis has also been placed on integrated tree planting and landscaping.
