The new desert style Saurines de la Torre Golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus has now been open for a few weeks and the response from golfers and owners is good. Jack Nicklaus created this course with features that are very similar to his most famous designs in Las Vegas.
This golf course is located only 20 minutes drive from San Javier airport and the beaches of the Mar Menor and close to the town of Roldan and is one of the many courses in the area designed by Jack Nicklaus however Saurines de la Torre is not now part of the Nicklaus Trail as it is managed by Olagolf Group as is Condado de Alhama and Mar Menor
The 6459 metre 18 hole part 72 golf course is designed with influences of the Nicklaus golf course in Lake, Las Vegas. With undulating fairways, limited bunkers and a great 6 hectare lake which plays a strategic role on holes 9 and 18 , guarantees an exciting final hole.
While being promoted as a desert style course by the designer it actually gives a ’links’ feel with many of the holes snaking between ‘dunes’ with rolling fairways and undulating greens. For long hitters, the par 5 holes are certainly reachable in two being under 480 metres.
The three par 3 holes are either long with two over 200 yards in length and although the 6th is short at 138 yards, the shot is played over water to a narrow green.
Disappointingly there is no clubhouse and no catering facilities in operation however a temporary building houses the pro-shop.
Response from owners on the Polaris World Forum include ‘ fairways are fantastic’ ; ‘I managed to eagle the 13th’ and ‘Saurines de la Torre is unbelievable’.
Green fees range from €50 in low season to €65 in high season (1st October to 30th April).
